What is Crime Stoppers and how does it work?

Crime Stoppers of Clayton is a program which collects crime information which may help police solve a crime. Some people prefer not to become involved in a police investigation and therefore may not share what they know about a crime directly with police. Crime Stoppers welcomes that same crime information and the person providing it does not need to give his or her name.

People who want to live in a community governed by the rule of law and who believe that justice is important should not hold crime secrets. If they can’t share the information with police directly, they can contribute by telling Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers offers members of the general public an opportunity to make calls about any criminal activity. Calls are not recorded. All callers (who enquire about the possibility of a reward) can receive a code number for identification which they require when making further contact with Crime Stoppers. If the information leads to an arrest, the caller may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Crime Stoppers offers a way of overcoming many of the reasons which inhibit people from reporting crime, such as not wanting to get involved, fear of retribution and not being sure that what they have to report is of any significance or who to tell.

Staff in the Crime Stoppers call center will note your information and ask some questions so that they fully understand the details you are giving. A report is then prepared and forwarded to the most appropriate police for investigation.
